Six bicycle mechanics from Nyanza area in Kenya are being trained to fix the specific bicycles that are issued to health care workers under the Bike4Care programme. With the help of CooP-Africa’s Bike4Care programme, medical workers in Africa use bicycles to visit patients at home. Health workers on a bicycle can visit more patients, reach patients faster, and travel longer distances. The health care workers are using bicycles with a coaster brake. Since the majority of bicycles in the area don’t have a coaster brake, mechanics are empowered with skills, techniques and experience to be able to repair the Bike4Care bicycles. Last week, the first part of the training took place at the Cycling Blue Workshop in Kisumu. In the workshop the trainees took apart the bicycle to the smallest part, and put it back together. Also, they fixed a spoiled bicycle that was used for the training. The second part of the training will take place at the work place of each mechanic, when the CooP-Africa trainer will assist the mechanic for one day in fixing bicycles in his area.
