4 students of Delft University of Technology have developed a series of prototypes of pedicabs. Developments include improvements in weight and local producability. The current stage is the development of charging systems with solar panels, ensuring the pedicabs to be able to ride with pedalsupport. The final stage for the students will be to develop a business plan for the pedicabs. The prototypes have been developed in conjunction with the staff of the Cycling Blue Workshop, for whom the students also have made a production manual.
A major setback was caused by Kenyan bureaucracy, who delayed the clearing of a number of pedicabs that were imported to be used as examples for developing the most optimal model for Kenyan context. For more information about this project read about the design phase of the pedicab as part of the African Bicycle Design, and the implementation phase of the pedicab, as part of Bike4Work when entrepreneurs are using the pedicabs as business.
