Cycling out of Poverty hosts the bicycle design platform www.wiki-bike.com. On the 10th of June 2011, the winning design of the African Bicycle Design Contest 2010-2011 has been chosen. The jury selected the bicycle trailer designed by the University of Technology Delft. The design is not very innovative and out-of-the-box. But due to in-dept context analyses and a well developed business model the jury selected this design to be the most suitable, durable and affordable solution answering to the needs of African families. Members of the jury were top designers, bicycle – and sustainability experts: Esther Yameogo Simpore (member of African Bicycle Network), James Thomas, Peter van der Veer, Luud Schimmelpennink, JC Diehl, Nick van Kimmenade and Frank van Rijn. The winning team will travel to Kenya to improve the prototype, train local mechanics and start local production in the Cycling Blue Workshop in Kisumu. But most of all will start the implementation of their business plan. For more information on this project, click here.
