Visitors of the Dutch National Park ‘De Hoge Veluwe’ can use white bicycles for trips within the Park. Air France-KLM Cargo flew 220 of these white bicycles to Kenya for a second life at Cycling out of Poverty. In principle Cycling out of Poverty is NOT using second hand bicycles in her projects, because proper spare parts are often lacking, the quality of the bicycles is usually low, the cost involved in shipping can accommodate many more bicycles on the local market, etc. However, in this case there are 220 bicycles of 1 specific model, who will not be sold and fan out over Africa, but stationed and serviced by the Cycling Blue bicycle workshop in Kisumu Kenya, and will be used by health care workers who can reach out to more patients because of the bicycle. This pilot project of second hand bicycles will reveal if indeed this way of re-using bicycles can be done in a sustainable way.
