Fietsenuitgifte Oeganda uitgesteld wegens overstromingen

Eind september was de tweede fietsenuitgifte in Oeganda gepland. Vanwege de hevige overstromingen in een groot gedeelte van Afrika is de tweede fietsenuitgifte in Oeganda uitgesteld. De Lionsclub Nijmegen heeft met een bridgetoernooi in maart en een golftoernooi in september van dit jaar 5.000 euro bij elkaar gebracht voor fietsen in Oeganda. De fietsen zijn bestemd voor het voormalige oorlogsgebied rondom Katakwi in het noordoosten van het land. De beneficiaries voor de fietsen zijn reeds geselecteerd, de eerste trainingen in onderhoud, sparen etc, hebben reeds plaatsgevonden, alleen het transporteren van de fietsen naar Katakwi is op dit moment nog niet mogelijk. Onze partnerorganisatie in Oeganda (FABIO) berichtte ons: “We were able to, as planned, train the communities and beneficiaries were identified. However, for the past month the area has been struck by floods.
This is affecting the people in diverse ways. Several roads have been submerged by water especially where there are swamps and for this matter
the government has cut off some major roads until the situation stabilises to necessitate repairs. Soroti – Kumi road is one of the affected, yet major route to Katakwi. This has further impoverished the people as they need relief in terms of food, shelter and clothing a s many have lost quite a lot. UNHCR has come in with other actors to help – FABIO can only wait for the situation to improve! The main means of transport is water and air – currently! So, we have not given out bicycle yet, until futher notice.” We hopen dat de situatie snel verbetert.
